ISS Show - Fort Worth Day 2, Expectations Managed

Went to two classes this morning, the Tradeshow floor, and Happy Hour. I've been fighting the feeling of disappointment about the show/conference. I kept telling myself, I expected too much or (like everyone) blamed Covid for a smaller/pulled back show. I still got a lot out of today. Let me tell you about it!

Session 1: Vinyl Cut and Print/Cut: Creating your own designs. Pro: I did see a couple of tools used in Illustrator and Photoshop that I will incorporate. I got a little nerdy with the instructor was teaching. Other than that, however, I either knew it or didn't care. Vinyl cuts seem like a lot for a little. especially when Direct to Film offers such a better option.

Session 2: Water Based Screen Printing. Back in the day, I was interested in this way of printing as "ecologically better." In reality, plastisol printing is a better fit with me and Water Based isn't really that much better. I am reinvigorated to incorporate discharge into my process. (This is where you remove the color from the garment before printing.) I think it could lead to a softer feel, or just on it's own look really cool and earthy. Terry (previous instructor) is a character and I enjoyed the class.

Showroom Floor: this is it! Main event for me. I'm all set to see Anatol, Brown, M&R, Stahl's, and tons of garment wholesalers and vendors. I'm actively managing my expectations with this part. Anatol (and several others) were no-shows, which initially bummed me out. But a HUGE thank you to the vendors that were there! Brown had an auto press that might just work for me. Garment distributors were there and I have a few more options for my clients. Saw a great demonstration of a Direct to Film printer, and when I'm ready, I know which heat press to upgrade to. On balance, very glad to have had discussions and viewed new product options.

Last event for me is the Happy Hour. My hope is to meet other screen printers who could exchange ideas. I did meet the instructor Terry, who continued to share his experiences...and samples!!! Turns out there were supplies that were supposed to be delivered Thursday, but didn't arrive until Friday late. My gain!

Like most things, this trip was different than what I thought it would be. I wouldn't travel this far for a show in the future, unless it incorporated a vacation element. I would come back to the ISS expo for the interaction with other screen printers and vendors. The education was good, but I would really reconsider the costs associated with them though. All that said, I'll be returning invigorated to elevate my craft and relations with my clients.

When I get a color to register to another, or the emulsion washes out to reveal the details of a design; these are moments of joy. I know...
